Lithium titanate battery (LTO) has huge market potential and high technical barriers to the industry
Lithium titanate battery (LTO), also known as lithium titanate ion battery, is a lithium titanate used as anode material for lithium ion batteries. It can be combined with lithium manganate, ternary materials or lithium iron phosphate and other cathode materials to form a 2.4V or 1.9V lithium ion secondary battery. Lithium titanate batteries have the advantages of good wide temperature resistance, good safety and stability, long cycle life, and good fast charging performance. They are widely used in electric motorcycles, new energy vehicles and other fields.
Lithium titanate battery is composed of ternary lithium cathode material, lithium titanate anode material, electrolyte and separator. Lithium titanate is known as the most promising anode material for lithium-ion batteries. Compared with pure metal lithium, it has the advantages of high potential, stable discharge voltage, and is less likely to produce lithium dendrites, which can greatly improve the safety of batteries. With continuous breakthroughs in production technology and increasingly strong market demand, my country’s lithium titanate output continues to grow, exceeding 18,000 tons in 2022, which lays a good foundation for the development of the lithium titanate battery industry. However, at present, the price of lithium titanate remains high, resulting in an increase in the production cost of lithium titanate batteries.
The lithium titanate battery industry has high technical barriers. The lithium titanate anode material is water-absorbent and is prone to flatulence during the production process, which affects battery performance. In recent years, relevant scientific research institutions in my country have focused on research on the flatulence problem of lithium titanate batteries, further promoting the development of the industry. The China Electric Power Research Institute uses doping technology to modify the lithium titanate anode material to reduce its activity and solve the problem of suppressing the flatulence of lithium titanate batteries. As doping technology is promoted and applied in major enterprises, the quality of my country’s lithium titanate batteries is expected to improve.
Lithium titanate batteries are mainly used in electric motorcycles, new energy vehicles and other fields. According to statistics from the China Association of Automobile Manufacturers, my country’s new energy vehicle production will reach 3.545 million units in 2021, with a market share of 13.4%. Benefiting from national policy support, my country’s new energy vehicle industry continues to enjoy increasing prosperity, bringing broad market space for lithium titanate batteries. According to the “2023-2027 Lithium Titanate Battery (LTO) Industry In-depth Market Research and Investment Strategy Suggestions Report released by the Industrial Research Center ” shows that my country’s lithium titanate battery market will exceed 550 million yuan in 2022.
Zhuhai Yinlong New Energy Co., Ltd., Jinpu Titanium Industry Co., Ltd., and Xinwangda Electronics Co., Ltd. are the main manufacturers of lithium titanate batteries in my country. Yinlong New Energy is the first company in my country to achieve large-scale production of lithium titanate batteries. In 2010, the company acquired Altair Nano, a global leader in lithium titanate batteries.
Industry analysts said that lithium titanate batteries have excellent performance and broad application prospects. With the rapid development of the new energy automobile industry, its market space will be further expanded. At present, compared with lithium iron phosphate batteries and ternary lithium batteries, lithium titanate batteries have higher production costs and a lower market share. In the future, as the technological level continues to improve, the development speed of the lithium titanate battery industry will accelerate.
