100% bio-based! Multilayer PET/PEF bottles can enter the PET bottle recycling stream

Avantium, a leading technology company in renewable chemistry
N.V. announced that the European PET (polyethylene terephthalate) bottle platform (EPBP) has granted Avantium interim approval to recycle multi-layer PET/PEF (poly2,5-furandicarboxylic acid) in the European bottle recycling market Glycol ester) packaging for a period of three years.

PEF has good performance|Avantium

PEF is a 100% bio-based, recyclable polymer that has a wide range of applications in single-layer bottles, multi-layer bottles, food and beverage packaging and textiles. PEF has excellent barrier properties against oxygen and carbon dioxide, so it can be used as a barrier material in multi-layer PET bottles and further improve its recyclability.

Third-party evaluation results show that at a market penetration rate of 5%, PET/PEF multi-layer bottles containing 10% PEF have no negative impact on the haze and other properties of the rPET products produced. Therefore, EPBP granted provisional approval for Avantium’s PEF resin under the following conditions:

●The maximum allowed market penetration is 5%;

●PEF content in a single bottle shall not exceed 10%.

Resilux, an international supplier of rigid plastic packaging, signed a conditional offtake agreement for PEF with Avantium in 2021, said its CEO Dirk De
“EPBP’s recognition is an important milestone for PEF entering the market and demonstrates the potential of incorporating PEF’s performance into PET product design,” Cuyper said.

Avantium expects to complete the construction of the world’s first commercial FDCA (2,5-furandicarboxylic acid) plant by the end of 2023 and achieve commercial launch of PEF in 2024. EPBP’s temporary approval lasts until June 30, 2025. Avantium can obtain data from the recycling market on a large scale during this transition period. EPBP will decide whether the temporary approval can be converted into formal approval based on the data.
