Latest test results show that multi-layer films containing PA6 can be recycled

Following a 2021 study on the recyclability of coextruded polyethylene/polyamide (PE/PA) multilayer films, independent research institute cyclos HTP
GmbH has completed further extensive research into the recyclability of multilayer films containing polyamide 6 (PA6) and ethyl vinyl alcohol copolymer (EVOH). BASF commissioned research on coextruded PE/PA6/EVOH high-barrier films and laminated PA6/PE films in household packaging waste. It has now been demonstrated that both membrane types are also suitable for recycling in polyethylene film streams.

Matthias, Senior Manager Market Development Polyamides for Extrusion Applications, BASF
Dr. Zorn said: “The results show that PA-containing PE film waste streams can be processed without major adjustments to the recycling process. This certification confirms that film manufacturers currently achieve the recycling of PA-containing film waste streams.”

Compatibilizers play an important role and are additionally incorporated into the laminate structure, allowing the PA components to be distributed within the PE matrix. In coextruded structures, the existing bonding layer in the film used to bond PA and PE becomes an effective compatibilizer during the recycling process.
Matthias Zorn says: “If additional PE-g-MAH is added as compatibilizer during primary film production, polyamides are even considered cyclos
Valuable material in polyethylene recycled by HTP. ”

This study of adhesively laminated PE/PA films, conducted in collaboration with leading high-performance film manufacturer SÜDPACK, clearly demonstrates that these films, previously considered non-recyclable, can also become recyclable. In this project, laminating adhesives from Henkel were used. According to new research, a wide range of PA-containing packaging can now be certified as recyclable.

Due to its unique properties, polyamide reduces the amount of material used in packaging applications, thereby helping to reduce packaging waste. They also improve the mechanical, thermal and processing properties of the packaging. While PE/PA/EVOH films are used in many cheese and sausage packages that require high oxygen barrier, in this area laminate structures are mainly found in printed film packaging.

Last year, Germany ranked 21st according to VerpackG
Article (3) Minimum standards for determining the recyclability of packaging affected by system involvement have recognized the recyclability of coextruded PE/PA films. This certification is another important basis for the fact-based classification of polyamides in packaging. The CEN standardization group is developing “Design for Recycling” guidelines at European level, and the central agency Packaging Registry sets minimum standards for assessing recyclability in Germany every year.
