SABIC and Microsoft join forces again to expand cooperation in recycling ocean plastic! New docking station contains 20% ocean-recycled plastic

SABIC and Microsoft collaborate to recycle plastic in the ocean (Ocean Bound
Plastics (OBP for short) cooperation in the field has been further expanded. Following the successful cooperation between the two parties in 2021 to develop the first consumer electronics product made of recycled ocean plastic – the Microsoft Ocean Plastic Mouse, SABIC and Microsoft recently jointly launched the first Surface series connection device made of ocean recycled plastic (OBP) and power supply housing, containing 20% ocean-recycled plastic.

Microsoft Surface Thunderbolt™ 4 Dock is Microsoft’s first Surface in the consumer electronics market
The Dock and power supply, whose housing (excluding AC cable) uses advanced recycled ocean plastic (OBP) polycarbonate from the SABIC TRUCIRCLE™ product portfolio.

Microsoft Surface Thunderbolt 4
Dock is a multi-functional docking station that can adapt to office needs in different scenarios, helping customers maximize the use of work space and achieve ultra-high-speed data transmission. It also provides a variety of connection combinations to power most important peripherals. This is true for Microsoft Surface
The material selection of Thunderbolt 4 Dock and power supply casing puts forward higher requirements.

This time SABIC provided Microsoft Surface Thunderbolt™ 4 Dock with products from its global ELECTRICAL &
Certified recycled LEXAN™ flame retardant polycarbonate resin from the ELECTRONICS product portfolio. As SABIC
Part of the TRUCIRCLE™ product portfolio, this material contains 20% ocean-recycled plastic, is produced using a mass-balanced approach, is ISCC PLUS certified and meets internationally recognized circular traceability standards.

The recycled content in LEXAN’s flame-retardant polycarbonate materials comes from plastics salvaged from the ocean and waterways that drain into the ocean, or from plastics that wash ashore. SABIC uses advanced recycling technology to develop prototype resins that meet Microsoft’s strict quality standards. The performance of LEXAN polycarbonate is comparable to that of virgin plastics and meets UL94
V0 flame retardant grade standard, with safety and reliability.

The successful application of Dock demonstrates the feasibility of using advanced recycling technology to use ocean recycled plastics into high-performance materials for consumer electronics.

Majed, Director of SABIC Construction Division
Al-Saadan said: “The successful application of this TRUCIRCLE solution demonstrates what is possible when SABIC collaborates with value chain partners to share knowledge and expertise to create more sustainable applications. Through advanced recycling technology, we overcome challenges and Delivering high-performance materials that meet Microsoft’s strict specifications while preventing valuable ocean plastic from entering our oceans.”

SABIC
TRUCIRCLE’s innovative product portfolio and services transform difficult-to-recycle ocean plastics into high-quality consumer electronics, bringing breakthrough solutions to protecting the marine environment. Let’s review how Microsoft’s recycled plastic mouse was born!

SABIC hopes to continue to work closely with partners in the industry chain to strive to increase the recycling of plastics and promote more sustainable development of the industry.
