BASF researchers won the environmental protection category of the patent award for a patent covering adsorbents and methods of making and using them. This innovative patent aims to use the safer and more environmentally friendly properties of bismuth-based adsorbents to remove impurities from process materials.
At the award ceremony on November 15, 2023, BASF researchers Artem Vityuk, Al Maglio, Linda Hratko and Keenan Deutsch (retired) received the Edison Patent Award that year.
Adsorbents are used to remove impurities, such as those found in petrochemicals. High-value petrochemicals, especially plastics, are produced from organic compounds such as ethylene and propylene. These compounds often contain arsine and phosphine, which can contaminate catalysts used in downstream processing. In process materials with highly active ingredients, some adsorbents containing lead as the main component will be used. BASF offers a wide range of adsorbents, including the new lead-free adsorbent PuriStar® R9-PAR S3.
