Jersey) awards BASF’s catalyst development team the prestigious 2023 Edison Patent Award
Award). BASF researchers won the environmental protection category of the patent award for a patent covering adsorbents and methods of making and using them. This innovative patent aims to use the safer and more environmentally friendly properties of bismuth-based adsorbents to remove impurities from process materials.
During the award ceremony on November 15, 2023, BASF researchers Artem Vityuk, Al Maglio, Linda Hratko and
Keenan Deutsch (retired) receives this year’s Edison Patent Award.
Adsorbents are used to remove impurities, such as those found in petrochemicals. High-value petrochemicals, especially plastics, are produced from organic compounds such as ethylene and propylene. These compounds often contain arsine and phosphine, which can contaminate catalysts used in downstream processing. In process materials with highly active ingredients, some adsorbents containing lead as the main component will be used. BASF offers a wide range of adsorbents, including new lead-free adsorbents
PuriStar® R9-PAR S3.

“Chemical innovation has become increasingly important as we bring sustainable solutions to the market,” said Dr. It can further optimize the existing product portfolio.”
BASF is actively developing its product portfolio to provide more sustainable solutions to meet the growing global market demand for sustainable standards in chemical production. Lead-free sorbents are an innovation in petrochemical processing, providing an environmentally friendly solution that meets purity standards for efficient conversion of materials and polymers.
Dr. Wei Guohui, Vice President Catalysts Global Chemical Markets, BASF, said: “Sustainability is one of the focuses of BASF’s Chemical Catalysts and Adsorbents business. Our state-of-the-art innovative solutions will ensure that customers use harmless materials in their production processes. Improve production efficiency and achieve maximum output, thereby creating value.”
New Jersey Research and Development Council in 40
The Edison Patent Award was established many years ago in memory of Thomas Edison, who lived in New Jersey and conducted research in his laboratory here. The annual award recognizes New Jersey’s top inventors and research institutions who continue to drive innovation and position New Jersey as a global innovator. The committee’s research team selects patent winners based on the importance of the research problem, innovative approach, socioeconomic value and commercial impact.
