Toluene diisocyanate manufacturer News Avient launches TÜV-certified product carbon footprint calculator

Avient launches TÜV-certified product carbon footprint calculator

On December 7, 2023, Avient launched its third-party certified Product Carbon Footprint (PCF) calculator, which is designed to assess the carbon footprint of Avient’s professional and sustainable material solutions. This cutting-edge product helps companies meet the growing need to develop and deliver on sustainability commitments, understand the environmental impact of products, and navigate the complex landscape of reducing carbon emissions, especially with upstream materials.

Avient’s PCF calculator adheres to the globally recognized ISO 14067:2018 standard for product carbon footprint calculations, with additional third-party ISO certification through TÜV Rheinland
14067 compliance certification.

PCF is an indicator that represents the total greenhouse gas emissions generated during the entire life cycle of a product, expressed in carbon dioxide equivalent (CO2e), and is divided into three ranges. Scope 1 emissions are direct emissions that are owned or controlled by a company, while scope 2 and scope 3 indirect emissions are generated by the company’s activities but from sources that are not owned or controlled by it. Understanding the PCF of raw materials can help identify opportunities to reduce emissions, improve carbon removal, and improve overall product development and process efficiency.

While many companies can measure and manage Scope 1 and 2 emissions, the complexity of obtaining specific Scope 3 emissions data for raw materials can create challenges for those companies with net zero or carbon reduction targets. Avient’s PCF calculator marks a major breakthrough, providing customers with cradle-to-gate emissions data for specific materials that may contribute to their upstream Scope 3 emissions.

Walter, Vice President of Sustainability at Avient
Ripple said: “As the world puts environmental responsibility and sustainability at the forefront, understanding and managing carbon footprints is critical. Our PCF calculator enables companies to assess the environmental impact of their products against Avient solutions and find ways to Opportunities for material selection or design to reduce impact. This approach is a key element in helping companies address their overall carbon footprint and achieve sustainability goals.”

As the global demand for sustainable solutions continues to grow, Avient remains at the forefront of innovation. Over the past three years, Avient has made significant progress in developing materials for sustainability, launching more than 40 new product lines to incorporate more recycled materials, bio-derived materials, lightweight solutions and energy-saving technologies . These include the launch of the industry’s first carbon-neutral thermoplastic elastomer in 2022
(TPE) – reSound™ Ultra-Low Carbon Footprint TPE.

Avient continues to expand its commitment to sustainability by providing PCF data for its globally manufactured materials and the PCF Calculator as a comprehensive resource for companies equally committed to sustainability.
