Chroman-2-one is a tyrosinase inhibitor suitable for lightening human skin or for the prevention and/or treatment of pigment defects such as hyperpigmentation, freckles, age spots, sun spots and environmentally induced skin Ageing. Skin and hair color depend on the amount, size and type of melanin (nitrogen-containing dark pigment) produced by melanocytes (cells that make melanin).

Melanin is produced in melanosomes starting from tyrosine and by means of various melanocyte-specific enzymes such as tyrosinase or tyrosine-related proteins, which are subsequently converted into keratinocytes.
